Sleep Apnea Evaluation: Better Sleep Means Better Living
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a very common—yet often overlooked—condition in which breathing repeatedly stops or becomes shallow during sleep due to partial or complete collapse of the upper airway. It can lead to chronic snoring, excessive daytime fatigue, morning headaches, and—over time—may contribute to increased cardiometabolic risk.
In our practice, we focus on early screening and dental evaluation of sleep-related breathing disorders, using modern, non-invasive, and highly reliable diagnostic tools.
WatchPAT 300: simple, accurate sleep testing—at home
To assess whether nighttime breathing disruptions may be present, we use WatchPAT 300, a clinically validated home sleep apnea test (HSAT). (ZOLL Itamar)
How it works
- You wear the device for one night at home, in your own bed—no hospital stay required.
- WatchPAT 300 records multiple physiologic signals, including oxygen saturation, heart rate, body position, snoring, chest motion, actigraphy, and the proprietary PAT signal. (ZOLL Itamar)
- The data are processed to generate key indices such as the Apnea–Hypopnea Index (AHI) and other clinically useful parameters to support OSA assessment.
After the recording, the results are reviewed and used to define the most appropriate, personalized care pathway—often in coordination with sleep medicine professionals.
The dentist’s role in sleep apnea
For mild to moderate OSA, or for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP (or prefer an alternative when clinically appropriate), a custom mandibular advancement device (MAD) may help keep the airway more open during sleep. (aasm.org)
Following the diagnostic phase, we collaborate with sleep specialists to:
- evaluate whether you are a suitable candidate for a custom mandibular device,
- fabricate and adjust the appliance with precision,
- provide clinical and, when indicated, instrumental follow-up to monitor effectiveness over time.
Don’t ignore snoring or persistent fatigue
With a simple, non-invasive test performed at home, we can help you better understand what’s happening during your sleep and take steps to protect your health.
