Gnathology: Balance and Health of the Jaw
Gnathology is the area of dentistry focused on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of dysfunctions involving the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), the chewing muscles, and the overall functional balance of the masticatory system. Symptoms such as jaw pain, recurring headaches, clicking or locking of the jaw, teeth grinding (bruxism), or even postural discomfort can often stem from an underlying gnathologic imbalance.
Our approach: Neuromuscular Gnathology
In our practice, we use a neuromuscular approach that considers the relationship between teeth, muscles, and joints—while also accounting for how the nervous system influences proper jaw function. The goal is to identify a stable, physiologic jaw position, where the muscles can remain relaxed and the joints are not subjected to abnormal stress.
With this comprehensive perspective, we aim to identify and treat the root causes of symptoms, not just their effects.
Advanced diagnosis with kinesiography
To evaluate jaw function with precision, we use kinesiography—a non-invasive technology that records the jaw’s micro-movements in real time. This exam allows us to:
- Detect abnormalities in opening, closing, and side-to-side movements
- Assess symmetry and smoothness of jaw motion
- Identify occlusal interferences or muscular tension that the patient may not consciously perceive
The data we collect helps us build a personalized, science-based treatment plan, which may include neuromuscular splints (bite appliances), targeted exercises, physical therapies, and—when needed—dental or orthodontic treatment.
Schedule a gnathologic evaluation: if you experience jaw discomfort, chronic headaches, or symptoms that may be related to your bite and chewing function, we can help you feel better by restoring the proper balance of your cranio-cervico-mandibular system.
