Neuromuscular Orthodontics: Beyond Straightening Teeth
Neuromuscular orthodontics represents an evolution of traditional orthodontics. It doesn’t focus solely on straightening teeth to create a beautiful smile—it aims to achieve a functional balance among the teeth, muscles, temporomandibular joints (TMJs), and posture.
In our practice, we address orthodontic concerns with a whole-patient perspective. We evaluate how muscular tension and joint dysfunction can influence craniofacial growth, occlusion (the bite), and overall well-being.
Our approach: Function before aesthetics
Neuromuscular orthodontics is based on a key principle: a healthy bite depends on neuromuscular balance. Before moving teeth, it is essential to identify the most appropriate jaw position—one in which the chewing muscles are relaxed and the TMJs function in harmony.
To do so, we rely on advanced diagnostic tools to measure muscle activity, assess posture, and precisely record mandibular movements.
Technology supporting diagnosis: Kinesiography
One of the primary tools we use is kinesiography, a non-invasive technology that records jaw movements during functional activities such as opening, closing, and swallowing. This assessment allows us to:
- Detect jaw imbalances that may not be obvious clinically
Neuromuscular orthodontics can be appropriate for children and adolescents during growth, as well as for adults—especially when symptoms such as the following are present:
- Malocclusion or an improper bite
aw pain or frequent headaches
A well-planned orthodontic treatment can improve not only your smile, but also your overall quality of life.
